Scroll Down there's lots of good information here.
If you drive into something real hard, often the steering wheel will be jerked out of your hands, and the auto goes careening off in some other direction. While you may damage the auto, thatís a separate issue.
In this steering arrangement, a worm drive gear is inserted in the power drive from the steering wheel to the tires. The worm drive has the quality that itís one-way. That is, it allows easy force to flow from the steering wheel to the tires, but if force is applied to the tires, itís stopped, and does not revert back to the steering wheel.
Thus, hitting some obstacle will not jerk the wheel out of your hands, and promotes safer driving conditions.
Depending on the automobileís design, it may eliminate the need for power steering.
