Rainbow Display
Scroll Down there's lots of good information here.

The Rainbow Display is a very useful and delightful mechanism. It’s useful, because it can be implemented without any spark-causing electricity where the information is gathered, such as in an aircraft’s fuel tank. For example: the Indicator Mask may be a float, to tell the pilot how much fuel there is.

It can be connected to any moving indicator.

All of the information is carried by harmless light through an optical fiber rather than electricity.

It was developed based on an experiment of Sir Isaac Newton that showed that white light is made up of a rainbow of colors, and when part of the rainbow is blocked out, it remains so.

On the flight deck, another diffraction grating hologram spreads the incoming light into a rainbow again, but having the shadow created by the Indicator Mask precisely placed within the displayed rainbow.

A delightfully colorful display, easily read by the pilot.
